PMI authoring

PMI Editor

Let users add and edit manufacturing requirements on a 3D model, with dimensions, tolerances, datums, and notes linked to relevant geometry.

Capture manufacturing intent during design

A review often reveals a missing dimension, an unclear tolerance, or a note that needs updating. PMI Editor lets users create and edit product manufacturing information (PMI) beside the model, keeping requirements connected to relevant geometry.

Add PMI editing to design tools, inspection software, or manufacturing preparation.

How it works

Select model geometry and choose a dimension, tolerance, datum, or note. Enter the requirement and adjust its label and leader in the view. Store the annotation with its geometry links, then make it available for later review or supported file exchange.

Create a requirement from selected geometry

Let users select a feature, choose an annotation, and enter its content. Support dimensions, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), datum references, and notes in a common 3D workspace. A user could specify a hole’s position tolerance or a face’s flatness alongside its size dimensions.

Geometry links help users see exactly which feature a requirement describes. Your application can guide entry around familiar tasks, such as adding a size dimension or defining a datum.

Preview clear manufacturing views

Move labels, adjust leaders, and organize annotations before sharing a view. Users can check readability as they work and refine crowded areas.

Keep measured values and specified requirements clear during editing. A measured distance describes existing geometry. A specified nominal value and tolerance describe what a manufactured part must meet.

Follow your customer’s drawing rules

Manufacturers often use a defined set of tolerancing and documentation rules. ISO 1101 addresses geometrical tolerancing, while ISO 16792 covers digital product definition practices. Teams using ASME Y14.5 bring their own dimensioning and tolerancing requirements. Required annotation types depend on the rules your customers use.

Build entry tools around requirements users recognize: size, position, flatness, a datum reference, or a manufacturing note. Geometry selection gives each annotation a clear subject. A preview lets users check its content and placement before saving a change in the model document.

Resolve missing requirements before a supplier handoff

A manufacturing review may find a hole with a size dimension but no clear position requirement. Sending questions through screenshots and separate notes can leave people unsure which feature or value was finally agreed. PMI editing lets a product team capture the agreed requirement beside its geometry.

Users can select the relevant feature, add or revise a callout, and arrange its presentation for review. Your application can keep the edited document with the revision being discussed and manage the approval before it is shared. A supported translator can then carry the required graphical or semantic information to another tool.

This gives design and quality teams a clearer handoff to work from. Engineering approval, change history, and supplier release remain application responsibilities. The editor supplies geometry-linked authoring so an agreed dimension or tolerance has a defined subject and a readable presentation.

Connect authoring with review and exchange

Use PMI View to review manufacturing requirements. Add suitable CAD translators to share readable annotations and associated requirement data with other applications.

Describe your PMI authoring workflow, from feature selection to a finished manufacturing view. We can help shape editing tools around the people who will use them.
