OCCT conversion workflows

IGES to STEP

Convert IGES to STEP. Write supported geometry with the OCCT STEP interface and check the receiving CAD application.

Build this conversion into your application with OCCT readers, writers and the commercial components identified below.

Read IGES for STEP conversion

A IGES-to-STEP workflow combines the IGES reader with the STEP writer. Use it when the receiving application needs STEP data from an existing IGES model.

Read IGS or IGES geometry with the OCCT IGES interface. Inspect the transferred curves, surfaces and topology before conversion: an IGES model may contain disconnected surfaces or wire geometry rather than a closed solid.

Configure the STEP geometry and document mapping

For mesh output, tessellate the imported faces and inspect boundaries between adjacent surfaces. Curves alone do not define a surface mesh. For BRep output, determine whether sewing or shape healing is needed before writing the translated geometry.

Write the imported model through the OCCT STEP interface. STEP supports BRep and mesh workflows, so choose the representation supported by the receiving application. Use the document layer when names, colors and assembly relationships are available and need to be transferred.

Validate the STEP result

Check units, surface coverage, open boundaries and tolerances. A successful translation does not establish watertightness or restore product structure that the source IGES file did not contain.

Reopen the STEP file in the destination and compare geometry coverage, placements, names and colors. A mesh representation remains polygonal inside STEP. If the next task requires solid modeling, verify that the source and output contain the required BRep geometry.

For a production pipeline, keep a representative source file and its expected geometry and attributes with the conversion settings. Discuss conversion integration with the source and destination applications, or compare the supported format interfaces.
